Fethiye is the working harbour town of the Lycia coast: a marina, Lycian rock tombs cut into the cliff, sarcophagi standing in the streets, and a bus station that puts Ölüdeniz, Kayaköy, Saklıkent and the Lycian Way within a day. It is cheaper and more lived-in than the lagoon resorts south of it, and Dalaman airport is about an hour away. Three nights covers the town, one boat day and one ancient-site day.

Getting around

Dolmuş minibuses run west to Karagözler, north to Çalış and south to Ölüdeniz, frequently until about 23:00; after that it is a taxi, so agree the price first. The centre is walkable along Atatürk Cd. Car and scooter rental is widely available in town; the D400 east to Antalya is slow and winding, and the inland D350 via Korkuteli can be quicker.

Watch out

Safety

Fethiye is a busy resort town and generally safe for tourists; the real risks are summer heat, unlit trails, sea urchins and boat or taxi prices that were never quoted. Agree the fare or the tour price before you start.
  • Summer heat tops 40 °C on the hottest days: do the rock tombs and the Lycian Way early, carry water.
  • Boat trips from the marina vary hugely in music, crowd and stops: ask what is included and how long each swim stop lasts before paying.
  • Çalış Beach is partly shingle and can be rough in the afternoon, as it is not sheltered by the island.
  • The castle above town has been closed and used as a dump at times: check locally before climbing.
  • Fethiye Museum has been closed for long stretches: check before you plan around it.
  • Some listed hotels have had booking and price-honouring problems: keep your confirmation and pay by card.
