Ölüdeniz is a beach resort on the Lycian coast, 17 km south of Fethiye, built around the Blue Lagoon and the 1,969 m limestone wall of Babadağ. The resort strip runs from Belceğiz beach through Ölüdeniz village to Hisarönü and Ovacık. It is a package-holiday town: most visitors fly into Dalaman and are bussed straight to a hotel, then spend the week between the beach, boat trips and a tandem paraglide. Two to three nights covers the lagoon, a flight and Kayaköy; a week suits families who want nothing but sea and pool.

Getting around

Dolmuş minibuses link Fethiye, Ovacık, Ölüdeniz village, Hisarönü and Belceğiz beach; they run every few minutes in peak season and stop early in the evening. Belceğiz beachfront is pedestrianised. Walking between the village and the beach is 5–15 min; Hisarönü and Ovacık need a dolmuş or taxi. No train; the nearest rail is inland.

Watch out

Safety

Ölüdeniz is a busy resort and generally safe for tourists; the real risks are summer heat, pebbled and rocky water entries, paragliding weather cancellations and bar bills with no posted prices: ask the total before you sit.
  • The lagoon peninsula is pebbles and rock: bring beach shoes.
  • Expect repeated charges at the lagoon for parking, beach entry, sunbed and parasol, plus high food prices.
  • Paragliding is weather-dependent; book a slot early in your stay so a cancelled flight can be rebooked.
  • Many hotels and restaurants close from November to April; winter has heavy rainstorms.
  • Hisarönü and Belceğiz bar strips are loud until the early hours: pick a room away from them if you sleep early.
