- Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
- Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
- Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
- Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
- Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
- Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
- Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.
Mount Buller is an alpine village and ski resort about 250 km northeast of Melbourne, rising to 1,805 m with 263 ha of skiable terrain in winter and a growing summer season of hiking and mountain biking. It is the closest major Victorian ski resort to Melbourne, roughly 3–4 hours by road, and has about 7,000 beds on the mountain. Skiing in Australia is expensive and Buller is no exception: expect high prices for beds, food and lift tickets, and book winter weekends and school holidays months ahead.

Watch out
Safety
- Resort entry must be paid and displayed to enter; cars must carry diamond-pattern wheel chains in winter, and 2WD vehicles almost always need to fit them.
- The Mount Buller Road (C320) climbs from Mansfield with blind corners, ice and loose rock; the limit is 60 km/h in good conditions and can drop to 40 km/h or less in bad weather.
- You cannot bring your own toboggan onto the mountain; hire one or book a toboggan park ticket.
- Winter temperatures are regularly below 0°C: waterproof jacket and pants matter even for snow play or sightseeing.Winter temperatures are regularly below 32°F: waterproof jacket and pants matter even for snow play or sightseeing.
- Snow varies a lot by season and the resort's sunny northern aspect melts faster than other Victorian resorts; check the snow guarantee terms before prepaying.
- Rideshare can be busy and delayed entering and exiting the mountain, and private transfers are expensive.
