Putnok is a small town of about 6,800 in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County, 40 km from Miskolc between the Bükk Mountains and the Sajó river. It has a local history museum, a Classicist mansion and a gallery, but its real draw is the Aggtelek karst caves an hour away. Most travellers use it as a quiet, cheap stop or skip it for Miskolc.

No local public transport or taxi in Putnok. Walk the centre; use regional Volánbusz buses for Aggtelek, Jósvafő and Miskolc. Trains run to Miskolc via Kazincbarcika about every two hours.

Safety

Putnok is a quiet small town and feels safe by day; the real issues are thin evening transport, unlit side streets and no taxi, so don't plan a late arrival without a booked bed.
  • No local bus or taxi: plan around Volánbusz timetables or drive.
  • Museum and gallery close at 16:00 on weekdays and are shut at weekends.
  • Aggtelek cave tours run on fixed departure times: book ahead in summer.
