- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
Chicago is the third-largest US city and the Midwest's rail and air hub, with a walkable downtown, a 18-mile lakefront path and a transit system that reaches almost everywhere a visitor wants to go. Three nights covers the Loop, the museums and one neighbourhood; five nights adds Hyde Park, a blues club and a day trip. May to October is the usable window; December to March is genuinely cold. Plan your days with our chicago itinerary.

Arrive & move
Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in
Getting around
The CTA 'L' and buses cover the city; the Red Line runs 24 h and the Blue Line reaches O'Hare around the clock. Buy a Ventra card or tap a contactless card. Downtown is walkable and the lakefront path is the best way to move north–south. Taxis and rideshares fill the gaps; a car is a liability downtown because of parking costs. See chicago public transport for details.

Hotels, shopping and restaurants; 10–20 min walk to the lakefront and the Loop. See Near North.
Lakeview and North Center
Wrigley Field, bars and brunch; 20–30 min by Red or Brown Line to the Loop. See Lakeview-North Center.
Hyde Park
University of Chicago, museums, quieter streets; 30–40 min by Metra or bus. See Hyde Park neighborhood guide.

Watch out
Safety
- Sales tax is added at the till; restaurant bills add tax plus an expected 18–22% tip.
- Winter wind off the lake makes the felt temperature far lower than the forecast number.
- Some South and West Side blocks have high violent-crime rates; check the specific area before booking, and stay in well-lit, busy streets at night.
- The lakefront path and the beaches are unguarded outside summer; the water is cold year-round.
- Check is chicago safe for current neighborhood advice.
