Zutphen is a small IJssel city of about 47,000 people with city rights from 1190 and a compact medieval centre that survived intact. It sits between the forested Veluwe and the flat Achterhoek, 15 km from Deventer and 30 km from Arnhem, and is reached by train from both. Almost nobody comes here as a first Netherlands trip; it works as a one-night stop on a rail route or a day out from Deventer, Apeldoorn or Arnhem.

Getting around

The old centre is walkable: station to the far side is 20–30 min on foot. Rent a bike at the station depot for the river dike and the surrounding villages; buses run from the station to the hospital, Leesten and Warnsveld. Driving in is possible but parking in the centre is paid and tight on market days.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-risk small city. The real issues are bicycles on the narrow lanes, uneven cobbles and steps in the old churches, and dark unlit stretches along the river dike after sunset.
  • Parking in the centre is paid and hard on Thursdays and Saturdays; use the free lot north of the station and walk 10–15 min.
  • Some cafés and bars stay open into the early hours; the centre is quiet otherwise.
  • Trains run roughly every 30 min by day but only hourly on Sunday mornings and at night.
  • Intercity trains split at Amersfoort and Utrecht: sit in the right part or you end up at the wrong station.
