Mostar is the hub of Herzegovina and the country's second stop after Sarajevo, 2.5 hours away by bus or train. The old town around Stari Most is small and walkable in a few hours, but the surrounding Neretva valley — Blagaj, Počitelj, Kravice falls — is what fills a second day. Most visitors come for one night and regret it; two nights is the honest minimum, three if you want a slow Herzegovina base.

Getting around

The old town is pedestrian and walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. Taxis cover the west bank and stations cheaply; local buses run but are rarely needed by visitors. For Blagaj, Počitelj and Kravice you need a car, a tour, or a bus plus taxi combination.

Watch out

Safety

Mostar is generally safe for tourists; the real risks are summer heat, uneven old-town steps, and pickpockets in the crowded bazaar in peak season. Landmine warnings apply only to unmarked rural areas far from the city — stay on paths and roads.
  • Old-town restaurants and cafés near Stari Most charge tourist prices; walk 5 minutes inland for cheaper food.
  • Summer heat is severe: 35–40°C in Jul–Aug, so sightsee before 11:00 and after 17:00.
  • Some buildings outside the old town still show war damage; the former front line along Bulevar Revolucije is a sobering walk, not a sight to photograph casually.
  • Do not attempt to jump from Stari Most; the Neretva runs at about 12°C year-round and the dive is for trained club members only.
  • Card acceptance is patchy outside the old town; carry some KM in cash.
