Banff is a small mountain town inside Banff National Park, 1.5 hours west of Calgary by road. It works as a base for lakes, gondola views and ski hills, and it is walkable end to end. The catch is crowds on summer afternoons and a park pass you need before you stop anywhere.

Safety
- You need a Parks Canada pass for any stop inside the park, even for gas in town; driving straight through without stopping does not need one.
- Summer parking downtown fills by mid-morning; use the free Bear Street Parkade and walk.
- Wildlife is real: keep 100 m from bears and 30 m from elk, and carry bear spray on trails.
- Lake Louise and Moraine Lake parking and shuttles book out days ahead in summer; check the official Parks Canada reservation system.
- Winter driving on Highway 1 needs winter tires or chains; check road reports before leaving Calgary.
