Banff

Banff is a small mountain town inside Banff National Park, 1.5 hours west of Calgary by road. It works as a base for lakes, gondola views and ski hills, and it is walkable end to end. The catch is crowds on summer afternoons and a park pass you need before you stop anywhere.

Get around
The townsite is small: most of downtown, the river and the trailheads are 5–15 minutes on foot. Roam Transit covers town, Canmore and Lake Louise, and buses take bikes. Taxis are metered and short hops are cheap.

- Wildlife is real: keep 100 m from bears and 30 m from elk, and carry bear spray on trails.
- Lake Louise and Moraine Lake parking and shuttles book out days ahead in summer; check the official Parks Canada reservation system.
- Winter driving on Highway 1 needs winter tires or chains; check road reports before leaving Calgary.
