Rusizi National ParkParc national de la Rusizi
Spend a half-day from Bujumbura: walk the savannah trail for sitatunga and waterbirds, or take a boat on the Rusizi River for hippos and a chance (very slim) of seeing Gustave the crocodile. Go in the dry season (June–September) for dry paths and better wildlife viewing. Entry is 10,000–20,000 BIF (about 5–10 USD).

- Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
- Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
- East Africa ↗Carry the yellow fever certificate on every leg of a multi-country trip: Uganda and Burundi check it for all arrivals, and a stop in Kenya or Ethiopia makes the next border ask for it.
- East Africa ↗Advice for Ethiopia, Somaliland, Eritrea, Somalia, South Sudan and the Congo border areas can change within days; read your government's page the week you fly and before every regional flight.
- East Africa ↗Price park, reserve and permit fees before comparing lodges: they are charged per person per day, often with VAT, and are fixed whatever bed you choose.
- Burundi ↗Check visa rules with Burundi's immigration service (PAFE) or an embassy before booking; carry a yellow fever certificate, which is checked on arrival.
- Burundi ↗Check your government's advice commune by commune: parts of the north-west (Kibira forest, Cibitoke, Bubanza, the RN5 north of the airport) and the Congo border carry advice against travel.
- Burundi ↗Book a travel-clinic visit several weeks ahead; malaria is present everywhere including Bujumbura, and medical care is very limited.

Rusizi National Park, 15 km north of Bujumbura, protects a strip of riverine forest, savannah and wetlands along the Rusizi River delta. It is best known for Gustave, a large Nile crocodile with a legendary reputation, but the park's real draw is its accessible birdlife, hippos and the shy sitatunga antelope. The park is small and can be seen in a few hours, making it a convenient half-day trip from the capital.

Time out
Finding the local time zone…
Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.

Questions people ask
How much does it cost to enter Rusizi National Park?
Entry is 10,000–20,000 BIF per person (about 5–10 USD). Boat tours cost around 80–120 USD per boat (up to 6 people), negotiable. Hiring a guide for walking trails is 20,000–40,000 BIF per group. All prices are 2026 estimates; check.
What are the best hikes in Rusizi National Park?
The savannah walking trail is the main hike: flat, 1.5–2 hours, easy, good for sitatunga and birds. A guide is recommended. There are no other marked trails.
When is the best time to visit Rusizi National Park?
The dry season from June to September is best: trails are dry, wildlife is easier to spot, and boat trips are more comfortable. The rainy season (March–May and October–November) makes trails muddy and wildlife viewing harder.
Can I see Gustave the crocodile?
It is possible but very unlikely. Gustave is legendary and has not been reliably sighted in years. Do not base your trip on seeing him.
Is Rusizi National Park safe?
Yes, with normal precautions. Keep a safe distance from hippos and crocodiles, follow your guide's instructions, and carry water and sun protection.
