Ústí nad Labem is the Czech Republic's seventh-largest city and the main city of North Bohemia, sitting on the Elbe 20 km from the German border. It is an industrial city and not a pretty one, but it is a working rail junction between Prague, Dresden and Berlin, and the surrounding countryside — sandstone rock, volcanic hills, river gorges — is the reason to come. Most travellers use it for one night or as a day trip from Prague or Dresden, then push on to Děčín, Litoměřice or Bohemian Switzerland.
