Sandusky is a small Lake Erie city (about 26,000 people) between Cleveland and Toledo, and the gateway to Cedar Point and the Lake Erie Islands. Downtown is compact and walkable; almost everything else needs a car. Summer is the whole point, and prices peak with it.

Getting around

A car is the practical default: Cedar Point, the malls and the ferry docks are spread along US 250 and the lake. Downtown is walkable and the Cedar Point causeway bans pedestrians. SPARC buses run a few city routes for $1 exact change (check the current schedule); taxis and rideshare work but are thin late at night.

Safety

Downtown and the waterfront are calm and well lit; the main risks are summer crowds, lake weather and driving after a day of drinking. Lock the car and keep valuables out of sight.
  • Summer weekends: Cedar Point car parks fill by mid-morning and hotel prices double.
  • Pedestrians are not allowed on the Cedar Point causeway.
  • Amtrak trains stop at Sandusky in the middle of the night; the waiting room is often locked.
  • Lake-effect weather changes fast; a sunny morning can turn to rain by afternoon.
  • Ferries to the islands run seasonally — check the last return before you buy a ticket.
