  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Killarney is a 400-person harbour town at the west gate of Killarney Provincial Park, 110 km southwest of Sudbury off Highway 637. The town itself is a short walk of docks, a museum and a few lodges; the reason to come is the LaCloche quartzite ridges, the North Channel water and the park's backcountry. Almost everything closes outside summer, and beds and campsites sell out, so book first and plan the drive second.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: the town is small but the park gate, trailheads and resorts sit along Highway 637. In town you walk. On the water, canoes, kayaks and boat shuttles come from local outfitters. No scheduled flights into Killarney Airport; private planes only.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

Drive Hwy 637 east to Hwy 69 north

Big-city supplies, museums and the nearest full grocery run.

Espanola

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Drive Hwy 637 to Hwy 69 north

Closest town with a supermarket and hardware; useful on a rainy day.

French River

go

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Drive Hwy 637 to Hwy 69 south

Provincial park, visitor centre and old voyageur country; the ghost town of French River sits inside Killarney's boundaries.

Door to door: About 2 h 30 min

Drive Hwy 637 to Hwy 69 south, then Hwy 400 south

Long for a day; better as a stop on the way south.

Door to door: About 3 h

Drive Hwy 637 to Hwy 69 north, then Hwy 17 east

Too far for a return day trip.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are water, weather and wildlife. Wear a life jacket, tell someone your route, and carry repellent and a first-aid kit on trails.
  • Most restaurants, shops and lodges are seasonal: check opening dates before you drive in spring or fall.
  • Backcountry campsites and park permits need a reservation; walk-up space in July and August is not reliable.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on Highway 637 and in the park interior.
  • Blackflies and mosquitoes are heavy in late June and July; bring repellent and a head net.
  • Fuel and groceries are limited: the general store in town and the outfitter are the main options.
