Quanah is a Hardeman County seat of about 3,000 people on US 287, halfway between Childress and Vernon, named for the Comanche chief Quanah Parker. Almost everything sits on one strip, 11th Street, which is US 287 itself. The town works as a leg-stretch and a museum stop, not as a base: two small museums, a courthouse monument and a rocket on a corner cover the sights in an afternoon. Copper Breaks State Park, 20 minutes south on Texas 6, is the reason to stay the night.
