Medicine Park is a 382-person village of red granite cobblestone buildings at the main entrance to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, 20 minutes north of Lawton off I-44. Founded in 1908 as Oklahoma's first planned resort, it is now a small arts and cabin-rental town: one walkable street along Medicine Creek, a swimming hole, a handful of restaurants and bars, and the refuge gate a few minutes away. Most visitors come for a night or two around the refuge, not for the town alone.

Getting around

The village is walkable in 10–15 minutes end to end. A car is needed for the refuge, Meers, Lake Lawtonka and Lawton; there is no local bus. Parking is free along East Lake Drive but tight on festival weekends.

Safety

A small, low-crime resort village; the real risks are summer heat, unguarded swimming and wildlife on refuge roads at dusk. Lock your car and keep food out of sight.
  • Summer heat: plan refuge hikes before 10:00 and carry water.
  • Cell signal is patchy inside the refuge; download maps first.
  • Bath Lake and refuge swimming areas have no lifeguard: check posted rules.
