Elvas is a hilltop garrison town on the Spanish border, 8 km from the Guadiana and about 200 km from Lisbon. Its UNESCO listing covers the star-fort walls, the Amoreira Aqueduct and the two outlying forts. The old town is small and walkable; the forts are not, so a car or a taxi changes what you can see in a day. Most travellers come for one night between Évora and Spain, or as a slow stop on the Alto Alentejo circuit.
