Bury is a former cotton town 10 miles north of central Manchester, at the end of the Metrolink green and yellow lines. It is a day trip, not an overnight stop: the market, two small museums, a heritage steam railway and the Pennine mill village of Ramsbottom. Most travellers sleep in Manchester and ride up on the tram.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 15 minutes. Metrolink trams run every 15 min, roughly 06:00–23:30, and you must buy a ticket before boarding; contactless is accepted at the stop. Bee Network bus 135 runs from Manchester Piccadilly every 10 min, about an hour.

Watch out

Safety

Bury is a normal commuter town and feels safe by day; the centre is quiet after the trams stop, so stick to lit streets and use a licensed taxi from the rank by the Interchange.
  • Bury has no mainline railway station: the tram is the only rail link.
  • The indoor market hall was closed in 2023 after RAAC concrete was found; the outdoor market still trades — check before you go.
  • Bury FC no longer exists in the league; for football you head into Manchester.
  • Trams stop around 23:30, so a late night means a bus or taxi back.
