Bury
One day, not a base: tram up from Manchester, do Bury Market, the art museum and the heritage railway, then ride back the same evening.
Bury is a former cotton town 10 miles north of central Manchester, at the end of the Metrolink green and yellow lines. It is a day trip, not an overnight stop: the market, two small museums, a heritage steam railway and the Pennine mill village of Ramsbottom. Most travellers sleep in Manchester and ride up on the tram.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Bury has no mainline railway station: the tram is the only rail link.
- The indoor market hall was closed in 2023 after RAAC concrete was found; the outdoor market still trades — check before you go.
- Bury FC no longer exists in the league; for football you head into Manchester.
- Trams stop around 23:30, so a late night means a bus or taxi back.
Bury is a normal commuter town and feels safe by day; the centre is quiet after the trams stop, so stick to lit streets and use a licensed taxi from the rank by the Interchange.
