- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
Ogden is a historic railroad town at the foot of the Wasatch Range, 40 minutes north of Salt Lake City on Interstate 15. Downtown is compact and walkable around three blocks of 25th Street, with Union Station museums at the west end. Most travellers use it as a cheaper, quieter base for Snowbasin skiing, Antelope Island and mountain trails rather than as a sightseeing city in itself.

Arrive & move
Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in
Getting around
Downtown is walkable: hotels, bars and Union Station sit within a few blocks of 25th Street between Wall and Washington Avenues. UTA buses cover the rest of town, and the FrontRunner commuter rail links Ogden with Salt Lake City and Provo. A car is the practical choice for Snowbasin, Antelope Island and the east-bench trailheads.
See & do
Day-trips, door to door
Day-trips
Door to door: 30–45 min each way
Drive north on I-15 then west over the causeway
Bison and hiking; bring water and check the causeway and park hours before you go.
Door to door: About 40 min
Drive east up Ogden Canyon, about 30 kmDrive east up Ogden Canyon, about 19 mi
Skiing in winter, lift-served trails in summer; no lodging on the mountain, so sleep in Ogden.
Door to door: About 1 h by rail
FrontRunner commuter rail from Ogden station, or I-15 by car
Fares rise with distance; weekday service is hourly with extra rush-hour trains.
Door to door: About 1.5 h
Drive I-84 then I-80 east
Doable as a long day; better as an overnight if you want to ski.
Door to door: About 1 h
Drive US-89 north through Brigham City
Easy half-day for the canyon and Utah State campus.
Door to door: 2.5–3 h
FrontRunner commuter rail south, change as needed
Too far for a day return; go only if you are heading south anyway.

Where to sleep
Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
Downtown / 25th Street
Walk to restaurants, bars and Union Station; the best base without a car.
Washington Blvd corridor
Chain motels and highway access; a short drive or bus ride from 25th Street.
East bench (foothills)
Closest to trailheads; you need a car for everything.

Watch out
Safety
- Utah alcohol rules are stricter than most US states: bars can serve full-strength drinks, but grocery and convenience stores sell only lower-ABV beer and no spirits.
- A 'private club for members only' sign on a bar is a leftover rule; you can walk in and order without joining.
- Summer afternoons in the valley get hot; start trail hikes early and carry water.
- Winter driving over the Wasatch passes can need chains or snow tyres: check road conditions before you set out.

Coming as the guide grows
- Airport-to-bed contract for SLC: FrontRunner and bus times field-checked, rideshare fallback, late-arrival rung.
- Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: 25th Street, Union Station, Washington Blvd and the east bench trailheads.
- Place pages with verified hours (Union Station museums, Dinosaur Park, Lindquist Field) and eat pages with last orders.
- Winter and hostile-weather fixtures so Snowbasin and Antelope Island days can go green.
