La Ventana

Go for 3–5 nights if you kite, dive or fish; skip it if you want restaurants, bars and shops within walking distance.

La Ventana is a two-village strip on the Sea of Cortez — La Ventana in the south, El Sargento in the north — with about 255 permanent residents and a winter wind that made it a kitesurfing base. There is no town centre to stroll: you sleep, eat and launch from the beach road, and you need a car or a scooter to move between the two halves. Come for the water, not for the nightlife.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Mexico ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Mexico's National Migration Institute (INM) or your nearest Mexican consulate; keep proof of your entry (stamp or digital record) until you leave.
  • Mexico ↗Security advice differs by state: some governments advise against travel to parts of several states. Check your own government's advice for each region on your route.
  • Mexico ↗Do not drink tap water; use bottled or filtered water and ice from reliable places.
  • Mexico ↗Foreign visitors to Quintana Roo (Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Bacalar, Holbox) pay the state VISITAX online at visitax.gob.mx only; lookalike sites add fees.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Walk inside each village; a car, scooter or e-bike is needed to move between La Ventana and El Sargento and to reach the hot springs. Bikes are lent or rented by some guesthouses. Boats are hired on the beach for Isla Cerralvo and fishing.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Isla Cerralvo (Isla Jacques Cousteau)

go

Door to door: Half or full day

Panga from the beach, arranged with a local boat or dive shop

Cliffs, sandy coves and good snorkelling; go on a calm-wind morning.

Playa Agua Caliente, El Sargento

go

Door to door: 20–30 min from La Ventana Sur

Drive or cycle north to the end of El Sargento

Geothermal water sits just under the sand; at low tide dig a pool. Free; bring a shovel.

La Paz

go

Door to door: About 45 min

Drive BCS-286 north, about 40 km (25 mi)

Malecón, whale-shark tours in season and the ferry terminal; a good wet-weather fallback.

Los Barriles

caution

Door to door: About 45 min

Drive south-east on the highway

Another wind-sport village; only worth it if you are already moving along the coast.

Cabo San Lucas

overnight

Door to door: 2.5–3 h

Drive south on the highway

Too far for a comfortable return day; sleep there or fly out from SJD.

Eat & sleepWhich area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

La Ventana Sur (Calle Tuna and the south beach)

Kite schools, beach bars and the densest cluster of lodgings; walkable within itself.

El Sargento (north end)

Quieter, closer to Playa Agua Caliente and the pickleball courts; 5–10 min by car from La Ventana Sur.

Corredor Isla Cerralvo

The road between the two villages: beachfront restaurants, dive shops and campgrounds, no foot traffic.

Watch out

Safety

Low crime in a village this size; the real risks are wind, sun, boat trips and unlit beach roads at night. Lock valuables in your room, keep cash for small places, and check the marine forecast before any water day.
  • The wind is the point: in winter it can blow for days and cancel boat and dive trips.
  • Cell and card coverage is patchy along the beach road; carry cash for small places.
  • The island was renamed Isla Jacques Cousteau in 2009, but locals still use Isla Cerralvo — use the original name.
  • Swimming with orcas and mobula rays is a licensed, weather-dependent tour, not a guaranteed encounter.
