TulancingoTulancingo de Bravo

Give Tulancingo one night as a stop between Mexico City and the Huasca/Real del Monte mining towns, or skip it if you only have a week.

Tulancingo is Hidalgo's second city, 93 km northeast of Mexico City, and the gateway to the Sierra de Pachuca mining villages. Its own sights — a 16th-century Franciscan cathedral, a railroad museum, the Huapalcalco pyramid — fill a half day. Most travellers use it as a bed and a bus change, not a destination.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Mexico ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Mexico's National Migration Institute (INM) or your nearest Mexican consulate; keep proof of your entry (stamp or digital record) until you leave.
  • Mexico ↗Security advice differs by state: some governments advise against travel to parts of several states. Check your own government's advice for each region on your route.
  • Mexico ↗Do not drink tap water; use bottled or filtered water and ice from reliable places.
  • Mexico ↗Foreign visitors to Quintana Roo (Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Bacalar, Holbox) pay the state VISITAX online at visitax.gob.mx only; lookalike sites add fees.

Watch out

Safety

Tulancingo is a working provincial city, not a resort: normal big-Mexico precautions apply. Use 911, keep to lit streets at night, and take registered taxis or app cars after dark.
  • Afternoon rain from June to September.
  • Huapalcalco has no visitor facilities and has suffered vandalism: go in daylight, with someone, and expect no tickets or toilets.
  • Some tianguis stalls sell counterfeit goods; nothing illegal for you to buy, but check quality.

What we know, and what is coming

On this page

  1. Best months: Mar–May, Oct–Nov · avoid Jun–Sep (rain), late Jul–mid Aug if you want quiet · month by month →
  2. 2 airports and 2 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands
  5. 4 day-trips, door to door
  6. 3 things to watch out for, with emergency numbers

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for MEX and NLU: last bus departures field-checked, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Walking clusters with rescue anchors: Cathedral and Jardín Floresta, the two old train stations, the market, Cerro del Tezontle.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Cathedral, Railroad Museum, Museo de Datos Históricos, Huapalcalco) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Rain and hostile arrival fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
