Sint-Niklaas
Go for one day, not a base: the Grote Markt, the balloon weekend in early September and the F4 bike path. Sleep in Ghent or Antwerp.
Sint-Niklaas sits between Antwerp and Ghent, 20–30 min by train from either, and holds one of Belgium's largest market squares. Hotels are few and aimed at business travellers, so most visitors come for the day, walk the centre in two or three hours and use the flat F4 cycle highway for the Waasland polders and the Dutch border town of Hulst.

Getting around
The centre is walkable: station to Grote Markt is 850 m, about 10–12 min. Local buses use the terminal beside the railway station. Bikes are the best way out of town: the F4 cycle highway runs beside the Antwerp–Ghent railway, and the old Hulst railway bed is a flat, traffic-free path north.

Safety
- The Mercator Museum has been closed for renovation; confirm it has reopened before you plan a visit.
- Hotels are few and fill on business weekdays: book ahead or stay in Ghent or Antwerp.
- Doel is a half-abandoned village with rough ground and few facilities; go in daylight and take water.
