Oost Gelre is a rural Achterhoek municipality of about a dozen villages, formed in 2005 from Groenlo and Lichtenvoorde. Groenlo has a small fortified core and a siege history; Lichtenvoorde hosts the big events. Sights are thin, so most travellers use it as a one-night stop between Zutphen and Winterswijk, or as a festival base.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe, rural and quiet. The real risks are unlit country roads at night, bikes on narrow lanes, and driving after a long festival day: use 112 for emergencies.
  • One rail station serves the whole municipality: buses to Groenlo and Lichtenvoorde are the last leg.
  • Many rural restaurants and museums close on Mondays and outside the season: check before you ride out.
  • Event weekends (Zwarte Cross, flower parade) fill every bed for kilometres: book months ahead or avoid those dates.
