Vevey is a small lakeside town on the Swiss Riviera, 1 h by train from Geneva and 10 min from Montreux. It is walkable in an afternoon, but its museums and the Lavaux vineyard terraces justify a night or two. Most travellers use it as a quieter base than Montreux or Lausanne, with the Riviera Card covering local buses.

Getting around

The centre is walkable. Local buses (VMCV) run along the lake and up to the funicular; hotels issue the Riviera Card, which covers local buses. Trains link Vevey with Montreux, Lausanne and Geneva. A funicular climbs to Mont Pèlerin.

Watch out

Safety

Vevey is a low-risk town; the real issues are pickpockets around the station and lakefront in summer, cold lake water, and Sunday closures. Emergency 112; police 117; ambulance 144.
  • Many shops and some restaurants close on Sunday.
  • The funicular to Mont Pèlerin and the Blonay–Chamby heritage railway run seasonally: check dates before you plan a day around them.
  • Lake swimming is popular but the water is cold outside summer; watch for boat traffic near the quays.
  • Museum opening hours change by season: check the official site before you go.
