Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Luton is a town of about 200,000 people 35 miles north of London, and almost everyone who comes here is passing through London Luton Airport. The town itself has two good free museums, a football club and a large South Asian quarter around Bury Park, but its real value to a traveller is as a cheap bed and a fast rail link to London, Bedford and the Midlands. One night is enough unless you are using it as a base for the Chilterns and Dunstable Downs.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is walkable; Arriva Bus A runs every 15 min between the airport, Luton station (about 15 min) and Dunstable (about 30 min). Luton has three railway stations: Luton (town centre), Luton Airport Parkway (for the airport via the DART) and Leagrave. Thameslink and East Midlands Railway serve all three; contactless and Oyster-style tap-in works on the London route.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 45–60 min

Thameslink or East Midlands Railway from Luton or Luton Airport Parkway to St Pancras

The reason most people are here; trains run through the night on Thameslink.

Dunstable and Dunstable Downs

go

Door to door: About 30–45 min

Arriva Bus A from the airport or town centre

Chilterns edge for walking, gliding and kite-flying; the tourist information point is here.

Woburn

go

Door to door: About 30 min

Bus or taxi, or drive the A5

Abbey, safari park and deer park; needs most of a day.

Leighton Buzzard

caution

Door to door: About 45 min

Train from Luton to Leighton Buzzard, then walk or bus

Canal and narrow-gauge railway; check running days.

Bedford

go

Door to door: About 30–40 min

Thameslink from Luton, 4 trains per hour off-peak

Riverside, museum and a bigger town for a wet afternoon.

St Albans

go

Door to door: About 20–25 min

Thameslink southbound from Luton

Cathedral, Roman ruins and a better market than Luton's.

Whipsnade Zoo

caution

Door to door: About 30–40 min

Drive or taxi from Dunstable

No direct rail; a car makes it a half-day.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Town centre (around Luton station and The Mall)

Best for a train-based stop: walk to Luton station, buses and the Arndale market.

Airport and Airport Parkway

Best for an early flight or a late arrival; nothing else to do on foot.

Bury Park

Cheap eats and shops, 15–20 min walk northwest of the centre; livelier and noisier at night.

Leagrave

North of town on the Thameslink line; quieter, useful if you are heading to Bedford.

Watch out

Safety

Luton is an ordinary British town, not a dangerous one: the real risks are late-night drinking crowds between midnight and 4am, football rivalry shirts, and airport rip-offs on exchange rates.
  • Do not walk alone between midnight and 4am; town-centre drinking crowds look for fights, and licensed taxis are the safe way home.
  • Do not wear Watford or Millwall football shirts in Luton, especially on Saturdays or at night: it draws verbal abuse and can escalate.
  • Airport exchange kiosks do not display rates and are well off the official rate; change money in town or use a card.
  • Airport 'duty-free' spirits can cost more than a UK supermarket; compare before you buy.
  • Mobile and Wi-Fi coverage inside the terminal is patchy: keep a printed or offline boarding pass.
  • Luton's tourist information point is in Dunstable, about 5 miles away, so do not plan on a town-centre office.

What this guide covers so far, and its sources

Not a trip line yet

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Luton. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

What we know, and what is coming

On this page

  1. Best months: May–Sep · avoid Dec–Feb (short days, cold); Easter and school holidays at the airport · month by month →
  2. 1 airport and 4 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands
  5. 7 day-trips, door to door
  6. 6 things to watch out for, with emergency numbers

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for LTN: last DART and rail times field-checked, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: town centre and The Mall, Wardown Park, Stockwood Park, Bury Park.
  3. Place pages with verified opening hours (Wardown House, Stockwood Discovery Centre, Someries Castle) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Fixture for match days at Kenilworth Road so town-centre beds and buses can be flagged.
