Upper Sandusky is a small county seat in West Central Ohio where US 23 meets US 30, about 1 h 30 min north of Columbus and 1 h 15 min south of Toledo. It is a car stop, not a destination: a 1870s courthouse used in The Shawshank Redemption, a county museum, an 1861 grist mill and a September county fair. Most travellers pass through in an afternoon and sleep one night at the highway junction.

A car is required: sights sit 1–4 km apart and there is no local bus. Downtown is a 10-minute walk end to end, so park once at the square and walk. US 23 (north–south) and US 30 (east–west) bypass town as a freeway; use the business routes to reach the centre. Sandusky Ave divides east from west, Wyandot Ave divides north from south.
