Taebaek is a highland coal town at about 650 m in southern Gangwon, where the Han and Nakdong rivers rise. Two nights covers Taebaeksan National Park, the Coal Museum and Cheoram's mining villages; one night is enough for the mountain alone. It is Korea's coolest summer city and its snowiest winter one.

Getting around

The centre is walkable, but sights sit in separate valleys. City buses 1 and 4 loop the city from the terminal and buses to Danggol (Taebaeksan) run through the day; frequencies are schedule-dependent, so confirm at the terminal or in KakaoMaps or Naver Maps (check). Taxis meter from about ₩4,000 and are the practical way to Windy Hill or O2 Resort. A car is the most flexible option; snow tyres or chains are needed in winter.

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are mountain weather, icy roads and Monday closures. 112 police, 119 fire and ambulance, 1330 (≈ under US$1) for English travel help.
  • Yongyeon Cave, the Coal Museum, the Paleozoic Museum and 365 Safe Town close on Mondays.
  • Winter snow and ice on mountain roads: chains or snow tyres, and check road status before driving to Manhangjae or Windy Hill.
  • Buses to Yongyeon Cave are infrequent; check the schedule at the terminal or take a taxi.
  • Milk-run buses from Seoul make 20+ stops and arrive later than the next direct bus.
