- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
San Angelo is the largest city in this sparse part of west Texas, on the Concho River, built around an 1867 Army post and still shaped by Goodfellow Air Force Base and Angelo State University. It is not on an Interstate, so nobody passes through by accident: you come for Fort Concho, the river walk, the sheep and lamb auction culture, and cheap Tex-Mex. Sights sit in a compact historic core, but a car is still the practical way to reach the state park, the lake and the mall strip.

Getting around
A car is close to essential: the city is spread out and there is no useful walking route between downtown, the state park and the Sherwood Way strip. US-67 and Loop 306 form a partial ring; Knickerbocker, Bryant, Chadbourne, Sherwood and Avenues L and N are the main surface roads. Concho Valley Transit runs buses Monday–Saturday from the transit centre at 510 N Chadbourne. Taxis exist but you call them; you do not hail one on the street.

San Angelo State Park
goDoor to door: About 30 min

7,563 acres of trails plus the park's own longhorn and bison herd; go at opening in summer.
Lake Nasworthy
goDoor to door: About 30 min
Drive south on Knickerbocker Rd, about 15 min
Fishing and shoreline walks; the freshwater mussel beds here are where Concho pearls come from.
Sterling City
cautionDoor to door: About 1 h
US-87 north-west, about 45 min by car
Small county-seat stop with a historic courthouse; combine it with a drive, not as a standalone trip.
Big Spring
goDoor to door: About 1 h 45 min
US-87 north to I-20, about 1 h 30 min by car
Good half-day on the way to Midland–Odessa; the state park has a spring-fed swimming hole.
Sweetwater
cautionDoor to door: About 2 h
US-87 north then US-84, about 1 h 45 min by car
Wind-farm country and the Rattlesnake Roundup; a long half-day, better as a route stop.
Brownwood
cautionDoor to door: About 2 h
US-67 east, about 1 h 45 min by car
Lake and depot-town stop toward the Hill Country edge; do it as an overnight, not a return day.
Coleman
skipDoor to door: About 2 h 15 min
US-67 east then US-84, about 2 h by car
Too far for the payoff on a short trip; keep it for a slow drive east.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
Downtown / Concho Ave
Walk to Fort Concho, the riverwalk, Miss Hattie's and the bars; the only area where you can leave the car parked.
Knickerbocker Rd corridor
Chain hotels and the restaurant strip south of the river; 5–10 min drive downtown, free parking.
Sherwood Way
Highway-side motels and big-box shopping; cheapest rooms, but nothing is walkable.
