San Angelo
Give San Angelo one full day and one night: Fort Concho, the Concho Riverwalk and the art museum, then drive on. Two nights only if you want the state park.
San Angelo is the largest city in this sparse part of west Texas, on the Concho River, built around an 1867 Army post and still shaped by Goodfellow Air Force Base and Angelo State University. It is not on an Interstate, so nobody passes through by accident: you come for Fort Concho, the river walk, the sheep and lamb auction culture, and cheap Tex-Mex. Sights sit in a compact historic core, but a car is still the practical way to reach the state park, the lake and the mall strip.

Get around
A car is close to essential: the city is spread out and there is no useful walking route between downtown, the state park and the Sherwood Way strip. US-67 and Loop 306 form a partial ring; Knickerbocker, Bryant, Chadbourne, Sherwood and Avenues L and N are the main surface roads. Concho Valley Transit runs buses Monday–Saturday from the transit centre at 510 N Chadbourne. Taxis exist but you call them; you do not hail one on the street.
