Mackay
Give Mackay 2 nights as a Bruce Highway stop between Rockhampton and Townsville, or 3 if you want Eungella and Cape Hillsborough; skip it if the Whitsundays are your only goal.
Mackay is a working sugar and coal port on the Central Queensland coast, about 900 km north of Brisbane on the Bruce Highway. The city itself is a practical stop with a marina, a good regional gallery and a botanic garden; the reason to linger is what sits either side of it — platypus at Eungella in the hills behind, kangaroos on the beach at Cape Hillsborough, and the southern Whitsundays an hour north. Two nights covers the town and one day trip; three nights lets you add a second.

- Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
- Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
- Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
- Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
- Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
- Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
- Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Waterfront hotels and the marina restaurants; 5–10 min drive from the CBD, quiet at night.
Blacks Beach and the northern beaches
Resort-style stays right on the sand, 20–25 min north of the centre; you need a car.

Watch out
Safety
- Tropical wet season Dec–Mar: heavy rain, cyclone risk and marine stingers — swim in netted areas only, and check Surf Life Saving Queensland advice.
- Long drives on the Bruce Highway with road trains and kangaroos at dusk; avoid night driving outside town.
- Eungella and Cape Hillsborough roads are steep and winding in places; check conditions after rain.
- Book airport and marina accommodation ahead in sugar-crush and mining-shutdown periods, when the town fills with workers.
