Didsbury (about 5,100 people) and Carstairs (about 4,900) sit 10 minutes apart on Highway 2A, midway between Calgary and Red Deer, on the eastern edge of the foothills. Didsbury has a brick main street of small shops and galleries above the Rosebud River valley; Carstairs backs onto wetlands and horse country. Sights are spread along country roads, so a car is the point of the trip. Most travellers use the pair as a half-day stop on the Calgary–Red Deer drive, or one night as a cheaper base than Calgary.

Getting around

A car is effectively required: the two towns are 10 min apart on Highway 2A, and museums, the wool mill and the berry farm sit on range roads outside town. Taxis run in both towns. Highway 2 is the fast Calgary–Red Deer route; take exit 305 or 315 for Carstairs and exit 326 for Didsbury. No public bus links the towns.

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are rural driving in winter, long distances between services and wildlife on the range roads at dusk. Lock the car and keep a full tank.

  • Rural distances: fuel, food and open businesses thin out fast west of Highway 2; fill up in Didsbury or Carstairs.
