Didsbury and Carstairs
One night is enough: two small farm towns on Highway 2, 45 min north of Calgary. Come for a museum, a wool mill or a farm lunch, not for a city break.
Didsbury (about 5,100 people) and Carstairs (about 4,900) sit 10 minutes apart on Highway 2A, midway between Calgary and Red Deer, on the eastern edge of the foothills. Didsbury has a brick main street of small shops and galleries above the Rosebud River valley; Carstairs backs onto wetlands and horse country. Sights are spread along country roads, so a car is the point of the trip. Most travellers use the pair as a half-day stop on the Calgary–Red Deer drive, or one night as a cheaper base than Calgary.

Get around
A car is effectively required: the two towns are 10 min apart on Highway 2A, and museums, the wool mill and the berry farm sit on range roads outside town. Taxis run in both towns. Highway 2 is the fast Calgary–Red Deer route; take exit 305 or 315 for Carstairs and exit 326 for Didsbury. No public bus links the towns.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Winter driving: Highway 2 and the range roads ice up and can close in blowing snow; check Alberta 511 before setting out.
- Rural distances: fuel, food and open businesses thin out fast west of Highway 2; fill up in Didsbury or Carstairs.
- Many farm, museum and restaurant hours are seasonal or by reservation only — call before you drive out.
- Cell coverage is patchy on the back roads; download an offline map.
Very low crime; the real risks are rural driving in winter, long distances between services and wildlife on the range roads at dusk. Lock the car and keep a full tank.
