Thurso is mainland Scotland's northernmost town, a grid of grey stone streets between the river mouth and a working harbour at Scrabster. Most visitors are here for one reason: the 90-minute NorthLink ferry to Orkney. The rest come for cold, hollow surf, coastal walking and the empty far-north landscape. It is a practical base, not a sightseeing town, and two nights is plenty.

Getting around

The town centre is small enough to walk in 15 minutes. Buses 80, 82 and 73/74 link Wick, John o'Groats, Dounreay and the west coast villages, but services are thin on Sundays. A car makes the coast, Castletown and Dounreay far easier; hire is at Wick Airport, not in town.

Dunnet Head is the mainland's northernmost point; the village itself is a sign and a car park.

Watch out

Safety

Thurso is a small, low-crime town and feels safe day and night. The real risks are weather and terrain: cliff paths, cold water, fast-changing coastal fog and long, empty roads with no phone signal.
  • Buses are sparse, especially on Sundays; check the last service before you rely on it.
  • Mobile coverage is patchy: 4G from EE, basic signal from Three and Vodafone, nothing from O2, no 5G.
  • Coastal paths and cliff edges are unfenced and the weather turns fast; tell someone your route.
  • Dounreay is an active decommissioning site with no public tours; do not approach the perimeter.
