  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Chapel Hill is the smallest of the Research Triangle's three cities and the most walkable: the UNC campus and Franklin Street sit next to each other, and Carrboro is a 20-minute walk west. Most visitors see it in a day, but a Tar Heels game, the planetarium or a slow afternoon in Carrboro justifies a night. A car helps for anything outside downtown.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Downtown and the UNC campus are walkable; Chapel Hill Transit is fare-free and covers Chapel Hill, Carrboro and campus, but service thins on weekends and stops early at night. Anything outside downtown — the botanical garden, Finley golf course, malls — is easier by car. Curb parking downtown fills up while school is in session; use the paid lots and garages on Rosemary Street.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Durham

go

Door to door: About 45–60 min

GoTriangle routes 400/405 from Chapel Hill to Durham Station

Half-day for the American Tobacco Campus and downtown food; pair with an Amtrak stop.

Raleigh

go

Door to door: About 45–60 min by car

GoTriangle CRX during commuter hours, or drive I-40

Museums and the warehouse district; the CRX runs commuter hours only, so check the timetable.

Hillsborough

go

Door to door: About 25 min

Drive US 70 or NC 86 north

Small historic river town; easy half-day with a car.

Pittsboro

caution

Door to door: About 25 min

Drive US 15/501 south

Courthouse square and a few shops; only worth it if you are already heading south.

Sanford

skip

Door to door: About 45 min

Drive US 15/501 south, then US 1

No draw for a short trip; go only for a specific event.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown / Franklin Street

Walk to campus, bars and restaurants; the Carolina Inn and a few small hotels. Book early on game and graduation weekends.

Carrboro

20-minute walk west of Franklin Street; cheaper rents, Weaver Street Market, Cat's Cradle and its own bar strip.

South campus / Manning Drive

Chain hotels near the Dean Dome and UNC Hospital; free Chapel Hill Transit buses run to downtown, but you will want a car.

Watch out

Safety

A safe college town; the real issues are unlit roads and steep hills if you cycle, game-night crowds on Franklin Street, and bars with no posted prices — ask the total before you sit.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd (NC 86) is a known speed trap: the limit is 35 mph on a road built for faster traffic.
  • Chapel Hill Transit is free and blue with lettered routes; green numbered buses and the CRX to Raleigh are GoTriangle and cost a fare.
  • Buses are pulled for the Tar Heel Express on UNC football and men's basketball home games: expect gaps.
  • Halloween on Franklin Street closes the street to cars and draws huge crowds; book beds weeks ahead.
  • Summer is hot and humid; plan campus walking for the morning.
