  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Laramie sits at 2,200 m on I-80, an hour west of Cheyenne and about 2.5 h from Denver. It is a university town with a compact downtown, one strong historic site and a mountain byway at its door. Most travellers use it as a night on the I-80 crossing or a base for the Snowy Range; the town itself fills a day, not three.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: downtown is walkable but the airport, motels and Snowy Range are not. Snowy Range Taxi covers town; rental desks sit at the airport and on East Grand Ave. I-80 is the main corridor and can close in winter.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Snowy Range Scenic Byway and Medicine Bow Peak

go

Door to door: 45 min to the pass; a half day with the peak hike

WY-130 west from Laramie through Centennial, about 45 min to the pass

Pass closed in winter. The Medicine Bow Peak trail is a half-day hike to 3,661 m — start early, storms build after noon.

Cheyenne

go

Door to door: About 1 h

I-80 east, about 1 h

State capital with its own downtown and museum cluster; easy half day or a night.

Centennial

go

Door to door: About 30 min

WY-130 west, about 30 min

Small mountain town at the foot of the range; a stop on the byway drive, not a destination on its own.

Medicine Bow

caution

Door to door: About 1 h

US 30/287 northwest, about 1 h

Tiny; only worth it if you are heading that way already.

Rawlins

skip

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

I-80 west, about 1 h 30 min

A fuel-and-food stop on the crossing, not a day out.

Buford

skip

Door to door: About 20 min

I-80 east, about 20 min

A roadside curiosity at the summit; five minutes, no more.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown / Ivinson Ave

Walk to restaurants, bars and the prison site; few rooms, book early on university weekends.

Grand Ave east (I-80 exits)

Chain motels with parking, 5–10 min drive from downtown; best value with a car.

Near the UW campus

Quiet, walkable to campus and cafés; fills for football Saturdays and graduation.

Watch out

Safety

Laramie is a small, low-crime town; the real risks are altitude, winter road closures on I-80 and fast mountain weather. Lock the car downtown at night and keep water with you.
  • Altitude: 2,200 m. Drink water, take the first day easy, and expect headaches or breathlessness if you fly in and hike straight away.
  • I-80 closes in winter storms and can strand you for hours: check Wyoming road conditions and webcams before driving.
  • Snowy Range Pass (WY-130) is closed in winter; the byway is a summer and early-autumn drive.
  • University events — late-August start, early-May commencement, autumn football Saturdays — fill every motel and lift prices. Book weeks ahead.
  • Summer afternoons bring fast thunderstorms above treeline; be off exposed ridges by early afternoon.
