  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Reach this subregion only from the EU side — Romania for Moldova — through crossings run by recognised authorities; no route through Ukraine, Belarus or Russia is planned here.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Re-read your government's advice for Moldova (it covers Transnistria) in the week you travel; the situation next door changes fast.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Carry euros in cash for Transnistria and village Moldova; cards stop working at the Dniester.
  • Russia ↗Check your own government travel advice for Russia before any booking; advice depends on your passport and changes without notice.
  • Russia ↗Direct flights from much of Europe and North America are suspended; no independent tourist route is documented here.
  • Russia ↗Confirm that your travel insurance and medical evacuation cover apply to Russia before you rely on it.

Omsk is Siberia's seventh-largest city and a Trans-Siberian junction, with a compact 19th-century centre on Lyubinsky prospekt and a Dostoevsky connection from his exile years. Sights are walkable; winter is severe and summer is short. Most travellers pass through on the train or stop for one night.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre around Lyubinsky prospekt is walkable. Buses, trolleybuses and trams run roughly 06:00–23:00; trolleybus 4 and 7 and buses 50, 60 and 69 are useful. Marshrutkas cover the same routes. Taxis are cheap but drivers rarely speak English: have your address written in Russian.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Tobolsk

overnight

Door to door: Overnight

Overnight train, or a jet boat up the Irtysh when it runs

Oldest Siberian town with a stone kremlin; boat service is irregular, so check the timetable before you plan around it.

Tomsk

overnight

Door to door: Overnight

Overnight train

Carved-wood architecture and a student city; too far for a return day.

Barnaul

overnight

Door to door: 16 h by rail

Train about 16 h, or a 1.5 h flight

Gateway to the Altai mountains; treat it as the next leg, not a day trip.

Petropavl, Kazakhstan

caution

Door to door: About 5 h with the border

Train, about 4 h

Check your visa and entry rules before you buy the ticket.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Lyubinsky prospekt / ul. Lenina

The walkable historic centre: museums, cathedral, cafés and most mid-range hotels within 15 minutes on foot.

Railway station area (Karla Marksa prospekt)

Best for a one-night train stop; buses and trolleybuses run up Karla Marksa prospekt to the centre.

Irtysh embankment / Mayak area

Quieter, near the river confluence where the fortress was founded; a longer walk to the main sights.

Watch out

Safety

Central Omsk is calm by day and the main sights are busy. The real risks are winter cold, unlicensed taxis and a handful of outlying districts after dark; keep to the centre at night.
  • Winter temperatures fall below −20 °C for weeks: layers, hat, gloves and waterproof boots are not optional.
  • Taxi drivers at the airport and station may quote inflated fares: agree the price first or use an app.
  • Avoid the outlying districts of Neftyaniki, Amurskiy posyolok, Port Arthur, Staryi Kirovsk and the tyre-plant area after dark.
  • Some historic carved-wood houses on ul. Krasnykh Zor are not protected and may be fenced or demolished: check locally.
  • Card payments can fail on foreign-issued cards; carry rubles in cash.

Fare anchors (2026 estimate)

  • Airport (OMS) → centre, taxi: agree the fare before you get in; about 20–30 min (check)
  • Railway station → Lyubinsky prospekt, bus: about ₽25, about 20 min (check)
  • Train Omsk → Moscow: about 40 h; book a reserved berth (check)

Say or show

  • Здравствуйте — Hello (zdrastvuyte)
  • Спасибо — Thank you (spasiba)
  • Сколько стоит? — How much is it? (skolka stoit)
  • Отвезите меня по этому адресу — Please take me to this address (atvezite menya pa etamu adresu)
  • Я не понимаю — I don't understand (ya ne panimayu)
  • Где туалет? — Where is the toilet? (gde tualet)

Cash in rubles is safest: foreign-issued cards may not work. Have addresses written in Cyrillic for taxi drivers.

What this guide covers so far, and its sources

Not a trip line yet

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Omsk. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

What we know, and what is coming

On this page

  1. Best months: Jun–Aug, plus a short window in Sep · avoid Dec–Feb (severe cold), Nov and Mar (mud and ice)
  2. 1 airport and 3 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands
  5. 4 day-trips, door to door
  6. 5 things to watch out for, with emergency numbers

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for OMS: taxi fare bands, bus option, late-arrival fallback.
  2. Walking clusters for the centre: Lyubinsky prospekt, ul. Lenina museums, the Cossack cathedral, the Irtysh embankment.
  3. Place pages with verified opening hours for the local-history museum, the Vrubel fine-arts museum and the drama theatre.
  4. Winter and hostile-weather fixtures so the cold-weather advice can go green.
