Scams and watch-outs
- Winter temperatures fall below −20 °C for weeks: layers, hat, gloves and waterproof boots are not optional.
- Taxi drivers at the airport and station may quote inflated fares: agree the price first or use an app.
- Avoid the outlying districts of Neftyaniki, Amurskiy posyolok, Port Arthur, Staryi Kirovsk and the tyre-plant area after dark.
- Some historic carved-wood houses on ul. Krasnykh Zor are not protected and may be fenced or demolished: check locally.
- Card payments can fail on foreign-issued cards; carry rubles in cash.
Central Omsk is calm by day and the main sights are busy. The real risks are winter cold, unlicensed taxis and a handful of outlying districts after dark; keep to the centre at night.
