San Juan del Rio is the oldest colonial town in Querétaro state, built around a 16th-century river crossing on the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro. It is a Pueblo Mágico with a compact centre of plazas, churches and a bridge you can still walk across. Most travellers pass through on the Querétaro–Tequisquiapan road; one night is enough unless you use it as a base for the opal workshops and nearby haciendas.

The colonial centre is walkable: narrow alleys, cobblestones and wide plazas, all within about 1 km. For the modern city, the archaeological zone at Cerro de la Cruz or the highway hotels, use a taxi or a combi; there is no metro. Buses to Querétaro leave roughly every 15 minutes.
