One night, or a half-day stop between Querétaro and Tequisquiapan: the colonial centre is small, the bridge and churches take 2–3 hours.
San Juan del Rio is the oldest colonial town in Querétaro state, built around a 16th-century river crossing on the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro. It is a Pueblo Mágico with a compact centre of plazas, churches and a bridge you can still walk across. Most travellers pass through on the Querétaro–Tequisquiapan road; one night is enough unless you use it as a base for the opal workshops and nearby haciendas.

The centre is calm and walkable by day; at night stick to lit streets around Plaza Independencia and take a taxi rather than walking the highway corridor. The real risks are traffic on the Panamericana, uneven cobblestones and unlicensed opal sellers.
