Cashel is a small Tipperary town built around one sight: the Rock of Cashel, a limestone outcrop with a round tower, a 12th-century chapel and a Gothic cathedral, plus Hore Abbey in the fields below. The town itself is a compact Main Street of pubs and B&Bs. Most visitors pass through in two hours; one night lets you see the Rock without the coaches and eat and drink on Main Street.

Walk. The town is compact: Main Street to the Rock is 5–10 min uphill, and Hore Abbey is a 15-min walk west across the fields. You only need wheels for Golden, Athassel Priory and the raceway. Taxis are available in town (check locally).

Watch out

Safety

Cashel is a small, safe town; the real risks are uneven ground at the Rock and Hore Abbey, livestock in the abbey field, and narrow roads with no footpath if you walk to Golden.
  • The Rock is mobbed by coach tours in summer; go at opening or after 16:00.
  • The Rock's car park is at the foot of the outcrop, not at the entrance; the walkway is steep in places.
  • Kearney's Castle on Main Street is closed to visitors; view the exterior only.
  • Hore Abbey is in a field with livestock; keep gates closed and give cattle room.
  • Athassel Priory has parking for about 3 cars and a field wall to cross; check access before you go.
  • Rural bus services are few; check the last return bus before you set out.
