The eastern suburbs — Guadalupe, San Nicolás de los Garza, Apodaca and Escobedo — are Monterrey's industrial belt: factories, warehouses and working-class housing, with MTY airport in Apodaca. There is little for a visitor beyond a stadium, a zoo-park and a handful of regional restaurants. Treat the area as a functional stop, not a destination.

Getting around

Metrorrey Line 3 serves Guadalupe (Eloy Cavazos, Lerdo de Tejada, Exposición) and San Nicolás (Col. Moderna, Ruiz Cortines, Los Ángeles, Hospital Metropolitano). Line 2 covers Universidad, Anáhuac and Sendero in San Nicolás. Ecovía BRT runs a 30 km corridor through San Nicolás to Guadalupe; Transmetro feeders link Apodaca. For the airport, taxis and ride-hailing beat buses with luggage.

Two small towns with a plaza and an unlit old mine; only if you have already seen Monterrey's main sights.

Apodaca airport zone

Chain hotels 2–5 min from the terminal; the only reason most travellers sleep east. Book only for a flight before about 09:00.

San Nicolás along Miguel Alemán

Corporate hotels near Paseo La Fe mall; Metro Line 2 and 3 reach the centre. Cheaper motels on the same strip have a poor reputation.

Guadalupe

Budget rooms and local food; residential streets are not set up for visitors on foot. Use it as a bed, not a base.

Watch out

Safety

Working-class suburbs where outsiders stand out. Guadalupe carries a gender-violence alert; avoid lone walking after dark, keep to malls, stadiums and hotel zones, and use ride-hailing door to door.
  • Guadalupe has a declared gender-violence alert (since 2016): women should avoid walking alone here, especially after dark.
  • Industrial estates and residential blocks are not tourist areas; don't wander on foot at night.
  • Some cheap motels along Miguel Alemán and MEX 85 rent by the hour: check the room and the door lock before paying.
  • Summer heat and humidity are the main health risk; carry water on any Cerro de la Silla or Topo Chico hike.
