Carignan is a low-rise suburb on the west bank of the Richelieu River, wrapped around Chambly in a half-donut shape. It has no hotel strip and no old town. What it does have is river frontage: the Chambly Basin islands, the L'Acadie river mouth, a stretch of the Chambly Canal, horse stables on chemin Bellevue and farm stands along Route 112. Treat it as a two-to-four-hour add-on to a Chambly or Mont-Saint-Hilaire day, not a destination in itself.

Getting around
A car is effectively required. Route 112 runs east–west through the commercial strip; Route 223 (Chemin du Richelieu) follows the river; Autoroute 35 ends at Boulevard Fréchette in the north. There is no useful local transit for visitors, and the riverfront, stables and farm stands are spread over 17 km north to south. Cycling works on the Chambly Canal and Richelieu River paths in summer.

Safety
- Almost no visitor accommodation inside Carignan: book in Chambly or Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu.
- The two parts of the municipality are not contiguous; a strip along the canal is cut off from the main territory by Chambly.
- Stables and farm stands are working businesses: call or check hours before driving out.
- Winter closes the islands, the canal path and most seasonal stands.
