Crawfordville

Base here 2 nights to reach Wakulla Springs and the Ochlockonee River; skip the town itself, a crossroads with a few motels and no sights.

Crawfordville is the seat of Wakulla County and the practical base for Wakulla Springs, 15 minutes east, and the Ochlockonee River, 30 minutes south. The town is a highway strip on US 319 with motels, barbecue and a seafood kitchen; the draw is the water and the woods around it. Come with a car, in spring or autumn, and treat it as two nights, not a destination.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is required. US 319 runs north to Tallahassee and south toward Sopchoppy; Coastal Highway (US 98) crosses east–west. There is no useful local bus, and ride-hailing is thin outside Tallahassee. Fuel up in Crawfordville before heading into the national forest.

Watch out

Safety

Low crime and a small-town feel; the real risks are driving at night on dark two-lane roads with deer, summer heat on the water, and storms in hurricane season. Keep a paper map for the national forest.
  • No car, no trip: sights are 15–30 min out of town and there is no transit.
  • Summer heat and afternoon thunderstorms; plan water activities before noon.
  • Hurricane season runs June–November: check forecasts and park closures before booking.
  • Cell coverage drops inside Apalachicola National Forest; download offline maps.
  • Wakulla Springs swimming can be closed after heavy rain or for manatee protection: check the park site.

What we know, and what is coming

  1. Best months: Mar–May, Oct–Nov · avoid Jun–Sep (heat, humidity, storms), plus the summer hurricane window · month by month →
  2. 3 airports and 3 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for TLH: rental-car desks, drive time on US 319, and a late-arrival motel fallback.
  2. Walking and driving clusters: the US 319 strip, Wakulla Springs, the Ochlockonee and Sopchoppy, the Apalachicola National Forest.
  3. Place pages with verified hours and fees (Wakulla Springs, Ochlockonee River, the historical society) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Storm and heat fixtures so summer and hurricane-season arrivals get a clear go, caution or skip.
