Crawfordville
Base here 2 nights to reach Wakulla Springs and the Ochlockonee River; skip the town itself, a crossroads with a few motels and no sights.
Crawfordville is the seat of Wakulla County and the practical base for Wakulla Springs, 15 minutes east, and the Ochlockonee River, 30 minutes south. The town is a highway strip on US 319 with motels, barbecue and a seafood kitchen; the draw is the water and the woods around it. Come with a car, in spring or autumn, and treat it as two nights, not a destination.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- No car, no trip: sights are 15–30 min out of town and there is no transit.
- Summer heat and afternoon thunderstorms; plan water activities before noon.
- Hurricane season runs June–November: check forecasts and park closures before booking.
- Cell coverage drops inside Apalachicola National Forest; download offline maps.
- Wakulla Springs swimming can be closed after heavy rain or for manatee protection: check the park site.
Low crime and a small-town feel; the real risks are driving at night on dark two-lane roads with deer, summer heat on the water, and storms in hurricane season. Keep a paper map for the national forest.
