Omaha

Give Omaha 2 nights: one full day for the zoo and Old Market, one for museums and the riverfront. A car helps; downtown alone works without one.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Omaha is Nebraska's largest city, on the Missouri River across from Iowa, about 486,000 people. Its draw is the Henry Doorly Zoo, the Old Market warehouse district and a compact downtown of free or cheap museums. Most visitors pass through on I-80 or arrive by plane at Eppley Airfield, 5 km from downtown. Two nights covers the core; three if you add Boys Town or a day trip.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the easiest way: the city is a grid, numbered streets run north–south and rise going west, parking is plentiful and often free outside downtown, and jams are rare. Without a car, stay downtown and use Omaha Metro buses (about $1.25–1.50 adult) plus the ORBT rapid line; a streetcar line was under construction as of 2026. Taxis cannot be hailed on the street — call or use Uber/Lyft.

Too far for a return day trip; stop en route to Lincoln instead.

Columbus

Small river city; only worth it if you are heading that way.

Norfolk

A long haul for a day; better as an overnight on a north route.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown / Old Market

Best for a first visit without a car: walk to the Old Market, RiverFront, Durham Museum and the ballpark. Hotel rates are the highest here.

Midtown / Dundee

Between I-480 and I-680; quieter, cheaper, with restaurants along Farnam and Dodge. A short drive or bus ride to downtown.

West Omaha (near I-680)

Chain hotels, free parking and easy I-80 access; you need a car for everything. Good for families driving through.

Airport area (Carter Lake side)

Closest beds to Eppley for early flights; little within walking distance.

Watch out

Safety

Omaha is generally safe in the central tourist areas by day and evening. The real risks are summer heat, winter ice, and a taxi system you must phone for; use normal city caution after dark and avoid unlit north- and south-side blocks you do not know.
  • Summer heat and humidity: heat indices commonly near 33 °C and can pass 40 °C — carry water and plan indoor stops midday.
  • Winter snow and ice: January highs average about 2 °C, with roughly 18 cm of snow in January alone.
  • You cannot flag a taxi downtown; book by phone or app.
  • Some neighbourhoods are sharply divided by income and race; stick to well-lit central areas at night and use normal city caution.
  • Boys Town is a working village with families: obey the 20 mph limit, stay on marked tourist sites and do not photograph residents without permission.
