Bethlehem is the middle of the Lehigh Valley's three cities, 70 mi (113 km) north of Philadelphia and 80 mi (129 km) west of New York City. The Historic District on the north bank is compact and walkable; the South Side across the Lehigh River holds the old Bethlehem Steel works, now SteelStacks, plus Wind Creek casino. There is no passenger train, so you arrive by car or coach.

Getting around

Walk the Historic District — nearly all landmarks sit on or just off Main St. Between the north bank and the South Side, take LANTA bus ($2 a ride, $3 day pass) or a short drive; the bridge walk is about 20 min each way. LANTA links Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton but is impractical outside the three downtowns. Taxis are not hailed on the street: call ahead.

Watch out

Safety

Bethlehem is a normal mid-size US city: the Historic District and SteelStacks are fine on foot in daylight, and the South Side gets loud around the college bars at night. Watch for ice in winter and fast traffic on the expressways.
  • No passenger train serves Bethlehem; the nearest rail is elsewhere in the region — check before planning a rail arrival.
  • US 22, I-78, PA 33, PA 309 and PA 378 are congested at rush hour and local drivers speed; local streets clog on the South Side.
  • Some Bethlehem Steel buildings are fenced and unsafe; stay on marked paths at SteelStacks.
  • Winter pavements in the Historic District ice over on the Main St. hill.
