Park City is a former silver-mining town at 2,050–2,580 m on the back side of the Wasatch Range, 36 mi (58 km) east of Salt Lake City by I-80. It is a ski town first: two resorts, Park City Mountain and Deer Valley, plus the Utah Olympic Park four miles north. In summer the same lifts carry hikers and mountain bikers. The historic Main Street strip is walkable and the city bus is free, so a car is optional once you arrive.

Getting around

Park City has a free city-wide bus system linking Main Street, Kimball Junction, Prospector, Deer Valley, Park City Mountain and the Canyons; skis and snowboards are allowed on board. Most of Main Street parking is free, with metered spots around $1.50/hour and a 3-hour limit; free lots include the China Bridge garage (levels 1–3) and the Upper Gateway garage (check current rates). A car helps for the Olympic Park and Kimball Junction.

Safety

Park City is a low-crime resort town; the real risks are winter driving on I-80, altitude sickness on day one and unmarked ski terrain. Lock your car and gear at trailheads.
  • Altitude: town sits at 2,050–2,580 m — expect breathlessness and headaches for the first day or two; drink water and take it easy.
  • Winter driving: Parley's Canyon on I-80 can close or require chains in storms; check road conditions before you set out.
  • Sundance (late January) books out hotels within 30 mi (48 km) of town — reserve months ahead.
  • Ski-season hotel rates run 2–3 times summer rates; summer condo check-in may be a lockbox with no front desk.
  • Apr–May and Nov are mud season: many lifts, restaurants and shops close.
