Pooncarie
Go only if you are driving the unsealed Pooncarie Road between Menindee and Wentworth: one night, fuel and water first, and check the Darling flood level before you commit.
Pooncarie is a Darling River waypoint of about 166 people in the Lower Darling, one of the least visited towns in New South Wales. It exists as a base for the northern edge of Mungo National Park and as a stop on the unsealed Pooncarie Road between Menindee and Wentworth. Both roads in are dirt, the river can flood the road for days, and there is one pub, one café and no scheduled flights. Come for the drive and the river, not for a town.

- Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
- Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
- Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
- Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
- Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
- Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
- Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around
The town is under 2 km² and you walk it. Everything outside town needs a car: Pooncarie Road to Menindee or Wentworth, Ivanhoe Road toward the Cobb Highway (B75). Both are largely unsealed and can be closed by flooding. A weekly CDC Broken Hill coach runs on Mondays between Mildura and Broken Hill — check the current timetable, as services change.

Watch out
Safety
- Both roads in are unsealed: Pooncarie Road and Ivanhoe Road. Check conditions with Transport for NSW or the local council before leaving.
- Darling River flooding can cut the road and strand you for days. Check the BOM river and weather pages before you commit.
- No fuel, no mechanic and no scheduled flights in town. Fill up in Menindee, Wentworth or Mildura.
- Do not swim in or drink from the Darling here: low flows and poor water quality have caused fish kills.
- Phone coverage is patchy outside town; carry water, a spare tyre and a paper map.
- Summer days pass 40°C (104°F). Drive early, carry 4–5 L of water per person and never leave the car on a hot day.Summer days pass 104°F (40°C). Drive early, carry 4–5 L of water per person and never leave the car on a hot day.
