Outback New South Wales is about a third of the state — roughly the size of Germany — and towns on the main roads sit 300 km apart. Trains and coaches run toward Sydney or Adelaide, not between the towns you want, so a car is close to essential. Base in Broken Hill for beds, food and the mining history, then treat Mungo, Menindee, Mutawintji and Tibooburra as loops of a day or more. Autumn and spring are the workable seasons; summer heat and winter cold both bite, and even light rain closes unsealed roads and low-level creek crossings.
