Vihti is a rural municipality about 50 km northwest of Helsinki, split between the service town of Nummela (roughly half the population, most shops and restaurants) and the older parish village Vihti kk, 10 km apart. Nature is the draw: nearly 100 lakes, the western edge of Nuuksio National Park, and marked trails. Without a car you can still reach both towns by bus, but the best sights sit in the countryside between them.

Getting around

Both Nummela and Vihti kk are walkable in themselves, but they are 10 km apart and the rural sights are further out. About 20 buses a day link the two towns (€3.50 one way, two hours of transfer time included). Buses to small settlements are infrequent and most frequent on school days, so check timetables before you commit. Taxis run under the Lähitaksi brand; the main stand is at Nummela bus station. A car makes the area far easier.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are dark rural roads with no pavement, thin winter ice on lakes, and long waits if you miss the last countryside bus.
  • Distances between sights are long: Nummela to Vihti kk is about 10 km, and Nuuksio entry points need a further 2.5 km on foot from the bus stop.
  • Countryside buses are sparse and thin out on weekends and school holidays.
  • There are no currency exchanges in Vihti; cards are accepted almost everywhere and there are six ATMs (four in Nummela, two in Vihti kk).
  • Weekend nights in Nummela can make taxis scarce.
